Hell City: Flesh & Bones

Belgian heavy metal rockers are back with the release of their third full length album titled Flesh & Bones. In 2015 the band suffered a major loss as bass player Michael Konovaloff tragically passed away unexpectedly. This is the band’s first album since his passing. They sought the help of Dan Swanö for mixing and mastering and the album is all the better for it having a clean and punchy sound. It’s a heavy album with aggressive guitar riffs and the one two vocal attack of Michelle Nivelle and Timmy Goffin. Nivelle has a robust and powerful voice but soft around the edges and very melodic. Goffin provides the sinister growls and the tandem proves to be quite effective.

A mournful guitar arpeggio begins “Resurrection”, a melodic and serene album opener with some catchy heavier riffs in its second half. The heaviness is magnified on “Playing With Fire” with its tight riff progressions and mixed vocals. The beauty and the beast vocals complement each other nicely. More powerful riffs can be heard in the catchy “Your Darkest Hour” and on the slightly sinister “Supernatural”, also featuring some tasty lead guitar. In fact, there are nice leads scattered throughout the disc. The soaring and emotive lead vocals on the title track ends the disc in memorable fashion. The guitar work is more moody and elegant, a definite highlight for sure.

Whether you are into melodic metal, heavy metal or power metal you should find something to latch onto with Flesh & Bones. I’m digging this one more and more.
