Jolly: Family

Here is a band I have not heard in a long time. Way back in 2008 I reviewed New York’s Jolly and their first EP titled The Revolving Cult Demo Finally Hits The U.S. and was suitably impressed. Unfortunately I have not listened to anything else by the band, that is until I received a promo for their latest studio effort titled Family. This is their fourth full length release.

The band plays really catchy modern progressive rock with a good dosage of pop and metal elements. I even hear some dance music in this one so you can well imagine this is quite a diverse release. The band is also very talented and when they reveal their chops, trust me, you will know.

The disc opens with “Lie To Me”, a catchy tune beginning with glistening guitar and keyboards before heavy riffs and pulsating electronics enter the fray. The vocals are superbly catchy, as are the keyboards and chorus. A great mixture of modern progressive rock and pop music. At times I was reminded of Muse as this has those dramatic vocals and riffs, both guitar and keyboards. Symphonic elements and talking vocals begins “Lazarus (Space Masala)”, a science fiction inspired piece with Eastern tinged guitar riffs and a deep bottom end. Another excellent tune with a dense sound layer and grandiose guitar and keyboards. The band slow it down with the lovely ballad “Rain” with its addictive keyboards and vocals followed by the densely packed electronics of “Ava” where the band almost ventures into dance music. The keyboards and electronics have a Depeche Mode feel although the music is much more upbeat than anything from that band. The mellow and moody “Who Will Remember (When You Forget)” segues right into the disc’s longest track “Let Go” showcasing a variety of twists and turns into pop and progressive rock/metal. Another supremely addictive tune as this band seemingly comes up with hook after hook while still being adventurous and creative.

Family is an excellent album, very melodic and certainly with enough progressive twists to keep many a prog fan happy. A highly recommended release coming to you via GlassVille Records.
