Deathcrush: Megazone
I have to say I have never listened to a ‘noise rock’ album, that is until now. The band is Deathcrush and they come from Oslo, Norway. They have been around since 2013, the same year they released their debut EP titled Skool’s In, after which they released a bunch of tracks digitally. Their new album Megazone is available digitally and on CD.
The three piece band consists of Linn Nystadnes (guitar, vocals, grand piano, samples), Vidar Evensen (drums, vocals, synth, noise samples) and Pelle Bamle (bass, vocals, circuit bent toys).
I’m still not entirely sure what to make of this album. Although I was raised on a steady diet of punk rock in the late ‘70s I am finding many of these tracks quite difficult. The barrage of noise that is “Khmer Rich” is a prime example. I suppose the vocals are kind of catchy in their own unique way but the noise drenched soundscape can be a little much to take. The use of electronics in ”Dumb” adds a bit more interest and the first track “Ego” is actually pretty catchy with its throbbing bass line and new wave style vocals. The last track “State of the Union” is pure pop punk and pretty catchy too. The main problem is that the music stops shortly after four minutes, then complete silence for almost twenty, until random noise at the end. I want to hear music, not silence. I have never understood why bands do this and I have always found it annoying at best.
Megazone is very much a mixed bag for me although I am sure fans of the ‘noise rock’ genre will get more out of this than I have. I will give the band credit for making music that is obviously not designed for any corporate entity or powers that be. Good on Apollon Records for giving this band a chance.
