I first became familiar with Moscow rock band IWKC (I Will Kill Chita) upon reviewing their 2017 release Hladikarna. That was a four star effort for me, reemphasizing the excellent psychedelic/stoner music scene emerging from Moscow. Digging into the vaults, here is their EP titled Cargo Cultreleased in 2016.
This is quite a varied album. The lead off track “Survival Instruction” is pretty catchy instrumental progressive rock with sweet keyboards and guitar. ”Cho Blya!?” goes in a completely different direction beginning with a funky beat, merging with dub and general wackiness with weird vocals and a definite experimental nature before reggae rhythms emerge complemented with dreamy keyboards. With the upbeat “Patris Et Filii Et Spiritus Sancti” quirky keyboards and effects steer the sound in a progressive fusion direction with cello having a fairly dominant role. Sweeping keyboard orchestrations and an ominous sound palette give “Keine Angst” high marks for creativity. It’s by far the moodiest track here.
Cargo Cult is a solid EP although I would love to hear another full length release from this young and talented band.
Another big shout out to the Addicted Label for bringing this one to our attention.
