Municipal Waste: The Last Rager

I recently started reading a novel about a fungus that figures out how to get inside barriers like rubber-soled boots or biohazard suits. It’s freaky stuff. The cover art reminded me of that book, mostly because the guy on the cover is obviously downing something really bad. Unlike the book, however, he simply doesn’t care. For Municipal Waste, this blend of the devil-may-care and the inevitable decay of life is just another day in the studio and fans don’t want it any other way.

I know that some fans think Municipal Waste has been a bit inconsistent lately, but put those concerns aside for 10 minutes and enjoy this four song EP. Sure, not everyone liked the band’s last album, but the songs here suggest that the band is having fun. The music is high-powered thrash that both thrilling and comical. These guys know how to thrash and their ridiculous song titles are oddly endearing. Musically, the whole EP is solid. “Wave of Death” makes for a cool opening, but I really liked the closing track “The Last Rager.” That song will surely show up on the band’s set lists and it’s a good choice. It keeps picking up speed while running to a solid conclusion. I also really enjoyed “Car-Nivore (Street Meat),” a thematically silly song that grabbed my attention and kept it for its short run. It’s also the best song about a killer car out there.

This EP is so short that it really cannot wear out its welcome. Not only does it give fans a handful of cool new tracks, but it also reminds us that Municipal Waste still wants us to know that they’re up to no good.
