Big Scenic Nowhere: Dying On The Mountain

Here’s another excellent release brought to you by the good folks at Blues Funeral Recordings. Big Scenic Nowhere is a new collaboration constructed by guitarists Gary Arce (Yawning Man) and Bob Balch (Fu Manchu). Eventually many more musicians were added resulting in their debut album titled Dying On The Mountain.

I know I have said this repeatedly throughout the year but there has really been a treasure trove of psychedelic related releases this year and this is right up near the top of the list. Although this is an EP with only two tracks there is still twenty-five minutes of music including the massive and sprawling opening tune “Dying On the Mountain/Altered Ages/Dying On The Mountain ��" Part 2�. A chanting-like vocal leads into an addictive riff progression and psychedelic jamming. The slower tempo adds a doomy feel and the synths and keyboards blend in space-like elements. The lead vocals are outstanding, so melodic and ear inducing. This is just an exceptional spacey/psychedelic rock jam of the highest order with plenty of progginess to satisfy many of our readers. Solid doom style riffs and ripping guitar solos define the catchy “Towards The Sun�. The guitar riffs and lead vocals are again excellent. It’s an accessible tune that a lot of music fans would appreciate if given the chance.

This is such an impressive album, I just can’t wait for a full length release. In the meantime I recommend anyone into heavy rock music give this one a try.
