In These Murky Waters: In These Murky Waters

Mattias Olsson is a very talented Swedish musician who should be well known to progressive rock music fans as he has been involved with many bands including: Necromonkey, Galasphere 347, "nglagård, White Willow, Molesome and Gösta Berlings Saga. In These Murky Waters is a new collaboration with vocalist Ewik Rodell. On this self-titled release Olsson plays Optigan, Orchestron, Mellotron and Chamberlin.

In These Murky Waters has produced something quite different from my usual listening fare but that’s a good thing as I am always looking to expand my listening palette. Imagine if you will the sounds of film noir made from old tapes, very retro and going back a few decades. It’s a minimalistic sound, kind of nostalgic yet still retaining a certain mysteriousness . When you add this to its psychedelic flavourings the mix is quite intoxicating. The disc begins with “Adventures In Central Park”, a sound bathed in organ and Mellotron with beautiful lead and backing vocals. The keyboards have a warble effect at times, that seems to add to the song’s psychedelic nature. It’s a gentle tune ending with static-like effects. More static-like vintage effects and Mellotron and can be heard on “Memories And Tape”, a sort of muted circus melody with a slow tempo. Electronic percussion is added to the melodic “Ophelia”, including a lovely vocal performance from Rodell. I believe the Mellotron is heard throughout but it could be the Orchestron as they are easily confused. Nevertheless, it’s a wonderful old school slowly evolving sound that had me hooked almost immediately. Sampled acoustic guitar highlights “We Came From The Ocean”, another mellow track but with dense waves of keyboards adding some symphonic touches. The static tape effect continues through most of the disc further connecting these twelve tracks.

The sound doesn’t deviate too much from what I described which makes for an even more cohesive listen. In These Murky Waters really impressed me. I hope it does the same for you. Recommended.
