Doomstress: Sleep Among the Dead

Houston, Texas rockers Doomstress is a relatively new band having formed in 2016. The band released a couple of EPs in 2016 and a split release in 2018 where they shared the disc with Sparrowmilk, a band I am not familiar with. In May of 2019 the band released their debut album titled Sleep Among the Dead and I have to say this is another one of my favourite doom/stoner rock/metal inspired albums I have heard this year.

Each member has a vital role and as such this is a complete band effort. There is no grandstanding and showing off, just honest to goodness heavy rock music that is as vintage as it is modern doom. The riffs are solid, including some cool progressions showcased in every song. That along with the outstanding vocals of Hollada, very melodic and easy on the ears the album comes across as ear candy for anyone into heavy rock and doom. The rhythm section cannot be forgotten as well as this is the power behind the music, a reliable source found on every track. There are no weak spots here and like a well-oiled machine the music works great from one track to the next. Songs like the super catchy “Dreaming Spider” and the heavy “Your God Is Blind” with its excellent vocals and solid grooves had me hooked from the very beginning. The relaxed vocals amidst the heavy groove in the lead off track “Bitter Plea” and the heavy fuzzed out doom riffs in the classic sounding “Bones And Rust” are more highlight material.

With not one duff track, Sleep Among the Dead is forty-one minutes of pure doom metal bliss. Absolutely recommended.
