Jenny Darren and the Ladykillers: Ladykiller

Jenny Darren is a vastly underrated British vocalist who became pretty well known in the late ‘70s touring with the likes of AC/DC and Patty Smith. Although her main forte is classic rock she has also delved into jazz although this music has never been released. In 2017 Darren and her cracking good band the Ladykillers released Ladykiller, and a killer album it is. Darren, sixty-seven years old at the time can belt it out with the best of them, similar in style to the late great Janis Joplin, Pat Benatar and Ann Wilson.

The first track “Ladykiller” is a classic sounding power rocker with Darren’s strong lead vocals and layers of excellent guitar riffs. Organ embellishments and catchy backing vocals are the icing on the cake. Next is “Heartbreaker” with its intertwining fiddle and guitar work. Another one in the classic rock vein. Funky rhythm guitar and soulful vocals make “Ode to Billy Joe” another out and out winner. For more bluesy guitar licks try the slow burning “Selfish” and the slinky rhythms in “Lady Marmalade” that has Darren at her soulful best. The beautiful “I May Go Wrong”, written by Darren in 1972, is a poignant country ballad with plaintive acoustic strumming and sorrowful slide guitar. There’s some hidden tracks at the end of the disc including an excellent cover of Billy Robert’s “Hey Joe”, made famous by Hendrix in 1966.

There are fourteen tracks in total and not one dud amongst the bunch. An excellent disc indeed. Released on Samurai of Prog’s Seacrest Oy label.
