Mind Key: MKIII - Aliens in Wonderland

Italian Prog Metal band Mind Key have returned with a new record after a 9 year absence called, MKIII - Aliens in Wonderland. Formed in Napoli in 1999 by Dario De Cicco (keyboards) and Emanuele Colella (guitars), they wanted to create a band that melded the sound of bands like Dream Theater, Symphony X and Evergrey with a songwriting approach inspired by '80/'90s Melodic Hard Rock of a Def Leppard or a Journey.

This third album contains 11 songs and is the bands most mature to date with a focus on hooks and melody that is interwoven with Metal guitar riffing and strong vocals. There is a strong undercurrent of Symphonic Metal throughout MKIII " Aliens In Wonderland with pulsating keyboards filling up space to add a more commercial feel to the songs that were already crafted to be more Melodic Metal than Prog Metal.

Mind Key have made a very bold decision to go in the direction of 80’s/90’s AOR meets Symphonic Metal on this new album, 9 years in the making. New songs like “Be Polar” and especially “Oblivion” show an almost Toto and Steve Lukather vibe of commercialism that Mind Key have not really experimented with before.

Overall, Mind Key aren’t really paving any new ground with this MKIII-Aliens In Wonderland release. I found it to not really grab my attention even after multiple listens and it became more background fodder than enticing my ears to sit up and pay attention. There is a quality in their music for sure, but I just found the sum of the parts to not be as entertaining as I would have hoped.
