Lost World Band: Spheres Aligned

I became familiar with the Russian progressive rock outfit Lost World Band and their 2016 release titled Of Things And Being. That was an excellent four star effort that certainly had me looking forward to their next release. Well it’s here and like their previous effort its quite an outstanding piece of music. Before we discuss the new album first a little history of the band. They formed in Moscow in 1990 and wanted to do something that wasn’t being done much at the time in their native country, namely progressive rock. The band took a few years to release their first album Solar Power in 2013, followed by Awakening The Elements (2014). Leader of the band Andy Didorenko released some classical music albums (centered around the violin) around the same time. He had also moved to New York City in 2006 which must have changed the band dynamics at the time. I give these guys (and gal) credit for keeping the ball rolling and eventually releasing four studio albums. Okay, on to the new release.

Tasty modern progressive rock with the emphasis on violin but really the entire band contributes some great playing. The crisp and propulsive “Aligned” begins the disc with energetic violin and tasty bass lines. Flute is added in the lighter moments making for some melodic instrumental prog. Dramatic drum and keyboard rhythms give “Rockfall” a symphonic touch whereas “Dawn Day Dusk Night” features dreamy lead vocals and gorgeous violin and piano. “Running In The Sun” has a ‘60s pop-like quality, very catchy and uplifting as is “Sail Away”, complete with clean guitar and piano. Some excellent guitar and flute interaction can be heard on the proggy “Crystallized” before ending with the heavy and somewhat darker “I Am The World”.

Spheres Aligned is another step in the right direction for Lost World Band. Hopefully they will garner some much deserved recognition. Highly recommended.
