Telepath: Mental Mutations

White Willow and Opium Cartel mastermind Jacob Holm-Lupo continues to keep himself busy with a never ending assortment of musical projects, and Mental Mutations is the latest release from one of his other acts, Telepath. Basically a one-man project, Telepath allows Holm-Lupo to dip into some of his doom & thrash metal leanings, as well as '80s horror film soundtracks, and Mental Mutations delivers nine new, mostly instrumental tracks of heavy & proggy surprises. "Mourner's Hill" kicks things off with some creepy Mellotron soundscapes, which leads into the frantic metal sounds of "To the Grave", chock full of rumbling drums and no shortage of pummeling guitar riffs. "Tormenter of the Young" is a tasty treat of classic '70s hard rock & prog, melodic guitar solos, synths, and organ pumping away in vintage Deep Purple style, while "Tyrellian" brings to mind Goblin and Tangerine Dream with its array of eerie synth passages. Jacob lends some vocals to the doom laden "No More Wishes", a beefy dirge ripe with Hammond organ, blazing synths, and huge riffs...I would have left the vocals out, as they are easily the weakest part of what is otherwise a potent track. "Race into the Wasteland" blends ELP styled prog with a touch of crushing metal, and it's ambient space rock on the far reaching "Bad Machine". Closing out the album are "Escape from the Witch House", a dark, hard rock number fueled by spooky synth textures and lots of guitar muscle, and the Mellotron & synth rich "Lullaby for Deep Waters".

Mental Mutations is an intriguing listen, and once again shows Jacob Holm-Lupo's love for classic '70s music in another fun musical project. Telepath should be on your immediate radar, take my word for it.

My Score:

My memory is not what it used to be, but I immediately recognized the gorgeous sleeve art of MENTAL MUTATIONS - only I can't definitively place it. I know it was originally a book jacket and the style is strongly reminiscent of the great British fantasy artist, Rowena Morrill. By any chance, is the artist/provenance listed in the cd booklet?
