Baba Yoga: L’Uomo Progressivo

Here’s a name completely new to me. The band is called Baba Yoga which is really the work of Gianfranco Salvatore who has many ties to the Italian progressive rock scene. His musical guests come from a variety of projects and bands like Banco del Mutuo Soccorso, Avion Travel, Goblin, Oak, Osanna and many others.

The album is titled L’Uomo Progressivo but this isn’t something that will hit you immediately as this can be a very challenging listen. I encourage all progressive music fans to take the plunge or at least give it a listen and try to make heads or tails of what’s going on. There are certainly moments when the Italiano Progressivo and the melodies can be quite beautiful as they slowly unfold but that only tells part of the story. The music can get quite experimental and that’s when your perseverance will pay off. The first two tracks; “Ouverture” and L’Uomo Progressivo” feature off the wall meter changes, heavy guitar riffs, weird effects, quieter clean guitar and deep baritone vocals. The fourth track “Contro i sapienti” is a kind of folky/rootsy acoustic guitar led piece with strange vocals and then the melody develops with flute and bag pipes. This is not your typical fare to say the least. You can hear Italian prog on “Flatus vocis” where electronics pulsate and a pretty piano melody unfolds or just lovely vocals and piano on the mellow “Il Diavolone”. One of my favourite pieces has to be “Dio (Deinde in obscuris)” with some of the best mood laden guitar on the disc with backing Hammond adding that much more depth.

A bit abstract, at times melodic and always interesting, L’Uomo Progressivo might take a little time to get but that’s half the fun. You will be sure to hear something new each and every time you put it on. Recommended.
