Psychlona: Mojo Rising

Over the last couple of years I have heard my share of stoner rock, most of it coming from the States. A recent discovery is the band Psychlona, hailing from Bradford, UK. Their debut album is titled Mojo Rising and if you dig stoner and/or desert rock you will certainly appreciate these Brits. In the band are Dave Wainfor (guitar, vocals), Phil Hey (guitar, vocals), Martyn Birchall (bass) and Scott Frankling (drums).

If you want to hear a fuzz drenched recording this is it. “Stone” begins the disc with a lone guitar intro, the notes having a bit of psychedelic trippiness and the use of loops is a cool effect. Then the heaviness starts with a slow riff but very intense with the vocals set back in the mix. The vocals are not technically perfect but totally effective for this style. Rumbling bass underlies the heavy ”Ride” as the groove digs deep and the fuzz and distortion absorbs under your skin. A swirling mix of heavily distorted guitars highlights the excellent “Down In The Valley” while more awesome bass gives “Big River” its underlying heaviness. The last track “Beakfoot” is an almost twenty minute psychedelic epic with some of the best vocals and guitar work on the disc. My only complaint is the five minutes of silence in the middle of the track. I have never liked that as it breaks up the momentum of the song. It’s still and excellent track though.

Psychlona have made an accessible and catchy stoner rock album with Mojo Rising. Another fine release brought to you by the good folks at Ripple Music.
