Adventure: New Horizon

Here we have the new album from prog rock veterans Adventure titled New Horizon. I first became familiar with the band upon reviewing their second album Beacon Of Light released in 2009. I missed their 2014 release Caught In The Web but will have to rectify that at some point. Two original members are still in the band; Terje Flessen (guitars) and Odd-Roar Bakken (keyboards). They are joined by Kjell Myran (vocals), Terje Craig (bass guitar, vocals), Alf Helge Lund (drums and percussion) and Elen Cath Hopen (vocals, keyboards).

The music here is more along the lines of heavy prog rather than let’s say symphonic although there are enough keyboard and synth solos as well as quieter pastoral movements that do add some symphonic touches. The heavier parts, more heavy prog than progressive metal mostly reminded me of Uriah Heep, especially when the mighty Hammond is brought into the fold.

The pastoral “Slow Fanfare” begins the disc in gentle fashion as keys and e-bow guitar slowly caress the soundscape. This leads to the hard rocking “Destiny” featuring loads of Hammond and galloping guitar riffs and the progressive “Horizon Suite” where the music veers in a few different directions including wonderful guitar and synth work along the way. ”Eirene (Goddess Of Peace)” bring back more Heep and perhaps Deep Purple and “You Belong” is a catchy mixture of mellow acoustic and electric guitar, synthesizer and organ. The male and female vocals are solid and quite melodic. The vocals throughout the disc are very strong, quite pleasant and general very tuneful.

While New Horizon is not a revolutionary piece of modern art (that’s very hard to come by these days) they do have their own sound and style with excellent musicianship and melodies throughout. For me, this is a four star release without a doubt.

An Apollon Records release.
