Graham Bonnet Band: Live In Japan 2017

Legendary Heavy Rock vocalist, Graham Bonnet (Rainbow, Michael Schenker Group, Alcatrazz, Impellitteri, etc.), has released a new live album under the moniker of the Graham Bonnet Band entitled, Live In Japan 2017. This live document focus’ on Bonnet’s career as a Solo Artist and his other famous bands that he has been a part of, expect for his Alcatrazz years (Bonnet released a live Alcatrazz record, Parole Denied last year). The Graham Bonnet Band storms through Bonnet’s long and storied career and delivers an excellent performance covering decades worth of great material.

For over four decades Graham Bonnet has lent his fantastic vocal talents to numerous great bands and songs and on Live In Japan 2017 the GBB goes through 15 new and classic tunes ranging from Rainbow’s Down To Earth album to newly penned Graham Bonnet Band material. Bonnet’s vocals are great and his patented powerhouse delivery is still a force. The GBB runs through old Down To Earth Rainbow tunes, the Impellitteri classic, “Stand In Line” and even a couple from Bonnet’s solo album Line-Up from 1981. Also featured are a couple of new songs from the GBB’s The Book album to round out the vast musical collection of Bonnet’s career.

Graham Bonnet’s vocals are especially excellent on the Michael Schenker Group Assault Attack” material, where he just simply nails it. The GBB rhythm section of drummer Mark Benquchea and the awesomely lovely Beth-Ami Heavenstone on bass, do a fantastic job of channeling their inner Ted McKenna (R.I.P.) and Chris Glen from that era of the MSG band and make this a true highlight of the record. Guitarist Conrado Pesinato does a decent job of the Schenker material, but sounds more confident on the other material and former New England and Alcatrazz keyboard player, Jimmy Waldo, holds everything together with his airy and spacious lines.

Covering material of his career from 1979 to 2017 is a big task and the Graham Bonnet Band pulls it off on this live record and even includes a bonus Studio version of their song, “The Crying Chair”, complete with alternate lyrics. Graham Bonnet is a legendary Hard Rock/Metal singer who somehow is still in the category of being “underrated” somehow. Bonnet has played with some of the most heralded guitar talent of the past 40 years (Blackmore, Schenker, Yngwie and Steve Vai to name a few) and this live retrospective of his great career is a perfect representation from his new Graham Bonnet Band. If you are a Bonnet fan, this pretty much a must have.
