Jeff Pifher and Socrates’ Trial: Alternate Futures/Past Realties

Jeff Pifher has quite the pedigree. After attending the Eastman School of Music where he studied under the great Walt Weiskopf and earning a Bachelor of Music degree he became involved with the Manhattan School of Music followed by attending the University of Miami where he obtained his Master’s degree. This leads us to Pifher’s sophomore effort titled Alternate Futures/Past Realities the follow up to Socrates’ Trial, released in 2018.

This isn’t your typical jazz album as the music spans a number of genres and styles from classical to pop to rock. Part of what makes this album so majestic are the brass and string sections, the latter arranged and conducted by Harlan Hodges. The string section consists of thirteen players on violin, viola, cello and bass so you can well imagine how this impacts the band’s sound. Dramatic, intense, cinematic and theatrical are a few words that come to mind. The first two tracks; “Alternate Futures” and “Past Realities” are really quite stunning. With both over ten minutes the band is able to develop an intricate soundscape with dramatic builds, huge crescendos and everything in between. It’s all well-crafted, taking time to build from softer moments to intense playing. The drumming of Corey Coverstone is particularly impressive and Pifher lays down some wonderful tenor sax including some scintillating solos as the entire band heats up.

Fifty-three minutes of music is spread over six tracks so the band can really strut their stuff when the need arises. Given the grandiose playing and complexity of some of the music I still found this to be highly melodic and accessible, very enjoyable from the first track to the last.
