Aerostation is a very interesting band form Italy with their self-titled album released in 2018. In the band are Alex Carpani (lead and backing vocals, keyboards, virtual guitars) and Gigi Cavalli Cocchi (drums) with Jacopo Rossi (bass).
Space rock, progressive rock, modern rock - there are lots of genres encompassing this band and these eleven tracks spanning around forty-nine minutes have been really sinking in the last few listens. Judging from the band name and a cover art you might have guessed a space theme and that’s exactly what you get. The first track is all trippy effects and samples like the spoken words of John F. Kennedy and references to Apollo 14. This leads directly into the razor sharp guitar riffs beginning “Wide Eyes And Wonder” with its super catchy vocals and keyboard layers. “Straight To The Sun” builds upon a moody repetitive guitar riff before setting into an up-tempo groove. The vocals are again excellent and the riffs spacey with neat keyboard and synth soundscapes. This is modern progressive rock mixed with electronic and alternative elements. At times I was reminded of the work of Dave Kerzner. The catchy “Fourteen Days Of Lightness” is another cool tune with a variety of trippy keyboard sounds, smooth vocals and propulsive beats. “Coldness” offers up some more tasty ear candy, some wonderfully soaring backing vocals in this one. The multi-layered guitar and keyboard drenched soundscape is as alternative sounding as it is progressive. The majestic keyboard based instrumental “Long Distances” has some really great keyboard moments throughout.
Aerostation have produced a very upbeat and moody slice of progressive rock that covers a variety of musical boxes without ever losing the plot. It’s an excellent disc and one I’m still absorbing with each successive listen. This is a band to watch out for.
