Elder: The Gold & Silver Sessions

Elder is a band completely new to me. The New England psychedelic metallers formed in 2008 and have released five albums thus far including their latest EP titled The Gold & Silver Sessions. Although only three tracks the disc still clocks in at thirty-three minutes giving the members plenty of room to explore their surroundings. In the band are Nicholas DiSalvo (guitars, keyboards, drums, bass), Jack Donovan (bass) , Mathew Couto (drums) and Michael Risberg (guitars, keyboards).

From what I have read about the band’s first four albums this new platter travels in a slightly different direction, preferring the mellow road and not near as heavy as past albums. The first track “Illusory Motion� is almost trance-like with mesmerizing guitar and soft backing drones. It has a very chilled out and relaxed groove, the floaty keyboards also help in that regard. Next is “Im Morgengrauen�, another subdued piece although the intensity does ramp up near the end as the riffs become more intense. On “Weibensee� the guitar and keys are much more spacey as the band extends into a very trippy jam. It’s an excellent track to be sure, a find ending to an album that has certainly piqued my interest in the band. Looking forward to exploring more of their work.
