Lucy In Blue: In Flight
Here’s another excellent release brought to you by the good folks at Karisma Records. The band is Lucy In Blue and this is the first I have heard of the outfit from Iceland. They formed in 2013 and released their self-titled debut in 2016. In the band are Matthías Hilfar Mogensen (bass, vocals), Arnaldur Ingi Jónsson (keyboards, vocals), Kolbeinn Pórsson (drums) and Steinbór Biarjni Gíslason (guitar, vocals).
The first thing that struck me as I listened to In Flight was the resemblance to early ‘70s Pink Floyd. That band has certainly been a major influence here and these guys pull it off with flying colours. Now you might be thinking this music must be completely derivative and in a sense that’s correct. Sure there are other influences, like Camel perhaps but really, the Floyd is what crops up the most. For some this might be a problem, you know, not presenting anything new under the sun. That may be but this music is so well crafted and performed all is forgiven in the ‘sounds like’ category, at least for me. Such is the case with the album opening “Alight Pt. 1” and its mesmerizing atmosphere ala Dark Side Of The Moon. Trippy psychedelic prog vibes are realized as the music builds and the sound washes over your ears. The moodiness continues with “Alight Pt. 2” offering differing shades of guitar, sometimes biting, other times more relaxed and mellow. The vocals have a late ‘60s Floydy sound as well. One thing I dig about this album is even when a song is mellow on the surface there is an intensity at work here, slowly revealing itself. That’s what I hear when I play the next track “Respire” - the moody guitar chords have an underlying heft even though the sound is quite dreamy. My favourite track is also the longest. At just over nine minutes “In Flight” features tasty guitar and trippy effects. Sometimes the less is more approach applies to the guitar work, played with passion and feel which is something not always achieved.
In Flight is a very impressive sophomore effort of early ‘70s influenced psychedelic progressive rock. I highly recommend it to anyone who fancies the genre.
