Bühlmann, Roland: Crucial

Swiss multi-instrumentalist Roland Bühlmann is a name I became familiar with a few years back. I have had the pleasure of reviewing his first two solo albums; Aineo (2015) and Bailenas (2017). He is back with his third release titled Crucial. As with past efforts Bühlmann plays everything himself, a well-rounded musician indeed. The album features both electric and acoustic sounds utilizing many natural percussion instruments giving the music an organic quality. Bühlmann is also an excellent guitarist and his darker edged riffing, fast shredding and angular guitar lines are found throughout the album’s eight tracks.

The disc begins with “Kaiilen” with the distorted guitar riffs set in the distance. The build is slow, lots of cool percussive sounds before the heavier chords return followed by serene and trippy ambient interludes. There is an Egyptian feel to some of the guitar work. Dense atmospheres and lighter moments of ambience give “Higgayon” shades of light and dark with the heavier guitar and quieter moments in stark contrast. Even in the mellow parts there is still lots happening so you will need to keep your concentration focused in order to hear all the details.”Arabon” is the longest track and probably the trippiest slice of fusion on the album. Bülhmann is able to create plenty of depth in his soundscapes and his guitar work in particular stands out.

Crucial is another creative progressive fusion release from an artist who obviously takes great care in pursuing his craft. Recommended.
