Tanith: In Another Time

NYC’s Tanith play vintage hard rock that harkens back to the 70’s Rock of Blue Öyster Cult, Thin Lizzy and Uriah Heep, while making an effort to not sound too derivative of those amazing bands. Their twin guitar harmonies are hard to miss and being a fan of those of which Lizzy made famous, I can give them a pass. Wink..Wink..

Tanith’s full length debut album, In Another Time (Metal Blade Records) has a Stoner meets Folk Rock flavor to it, largely due to the combined vocals of Russ Tippins (Satan) and Cindy Maynard. Their combo of vocals lends itself to both of those genres and with their sludgy guitar tones in tow, you can’t help but get that Stoner/Acid Rock vibe mixed with a Folky thing, too. There’s a character that works well between the two with trade-offs, layering that is interesting.

Tanith are channeling their collective 1970 vibe here on In Another Time. A time that is post Sabbath with female co-lead vocals and music that is very demon & wizards and Lord of the Rings inspired. If you dig that early 70’s Occult-ish sound like Coven, then you will totally dig this. Retro is very “in” these days and this has that “retro” sound, but from an era that was never widely popular, but has a “cult following”. Personally, I’d rather listen to BÖC and Buck Dharma who did it right the first time around. I found Tanith’s In Another Time a bit bland and found my attention waning to much of the record other than their Thin Lizzy-ish twin guitar harmonies, which are always welcome and appreciated.
