Crommie, Daniel: starseedhead

I have reviewed many Daniel Crommie discs over the years and here is his latest titled Starseedhead. If you are familiar with Crommie’s work you will know what to expect " trippy ambient/world sounds and very textural in nature.

The first track “starseedhead” is quite experimental with various sounds and effects, expansive percussion and is really quite trippy as waves of synths enter and leave before the beat begins giving this one some world atmospheres as well. The use of world rhythmic structures and ambient spaciness works quite well. Crommie’s flute work in “Spireae” gives it a spiritual mysticism somewhat touching on Native American culture, or at least that’s the vibe I get where as “Solid Red” is built more on cascading synth textures. The fast paced “Crucifixated (Greed)” contains some of the disc’s more progressive moments and is the heaviest track here. Influences of Eno, Fripp and Tangerine Dream can be heard throughout the album.

As is usually the case with Crommie’s solo work he plays most everything himself " bamboo, clay and wood flutes, analogue and digital synthesizers, electric dulcimer, percussion, devices, voice and samples. Guest musician Eldon Hardenbrook plays bass and guitar synth on “Time in Seconds”, definitely one of my favourite pieces from the album.

Released on Crommie’s own New Weave label.
