Kayhan Kalhor/Rembrandt Frerichs/Tony Overwater/Vinsent Planjer: It’s Still Autumn

Although using minimal instruments the sound on It’s Still Autumn, the new album led by world renowned kamanche player Kayhan Kalhor, is both mesmerizing and exotic. Free jazz and world music is combined to create something quite unique, a refreshing take on both of these genres. I was unfamiliar with the kamanche (an Iranian bowed instrument) and really it is the fundamental sound at work here whether it be rhythms or solos. Check out some YouTube videos of Kayhan, he is truly an impressive player. Of course there are three other members of the quartet including Rembrandt Frerichs (fortepiano, harmonium), Tony Overwater (violone, double bass) and Vinsent Planjer (whisper kit). The fortepiano is an ancient piano (in this case a replica of a hundreds year old model) and the violone is an ancient ancestor of the double bass. The whisper kit is designed to create a softer drum sound with added percussion as well. All of this is used to create a completely organic and exotic sound with each musician adding their own musical perspective. There is not a great variety between individual tracks but this isn’t a problem as it’s all quiet unique in its own right. Of course the music does vary in its intensity, whether soft laments as in the quiet solitude of “Still” or the riveting kamanche solo in “Kayhan’s Chahar”. There is almost fifty-four minutes of music to dig into here so if you appreciate exotic sounds It’s Still Autumn may be for you.
