Exhumed: Horror
If you have a Horror metal playlist, this album should be on it. If you don’t have a Horror metal playlist, make one and put this album on it. Fans of the band should already know what to expect here but I think even they’ll be surprised at how crazed and relentless this album is. Exhumed always had a reputation for its wild and gory style, but this album represents the band at their most intense. Many fans will be glad to know that it also casts aside any hint of the band’s occasional forays into melody and instead gives fans something much more stripped-back and intense. The result is one of the band’s best versions of grinding death metal.
All the songs on this album are on the shorter side, but two of them are really short. The five second of “Utter Mutilation of Your Corpse” is actually shorter than the track’s actual running time. By comparison, the thirty-four second song “Dead Meat” seems like an indulgence. But if quick stabs of horror metal aren’t your thing, the rest of the album gives you plenty of tracks that range anywhere from 90 seconds to three minutes. Given the album’s relatively short running time, you may find yourself wanting more, but Exhumed should always stick with the short form. This kind of musical aggression thrives on the quick surprise and the short burst.
Not all gore metal is created equal and some bands are frankly better than others. Exhumed has a well-deserved reputation for being among the best of the best. For this album, the band also drew on the production talents of Alejandro Corrdeor (Brujeria, Nausea) and the mixing and mastering skill of Joel Grind (Toxic Holocaust). Not surprisingly, the album sounds amazing and certainly gives fans some of the band’s most intense music in years.
