Christophe Rocher/Joe Fonda/Harvey Sorgen: New Origin

Veteran American jazz musicians, bassist Joe Fonda and drummer Harvey Sorgen team with musical cohort Christophe Rocher, a French clarinetist on a brand new album titled New Origin. Improvisational jazz fans should really be excited over this one. The musicianship, creativity, complexity and unexpected nature of the music is certainly to be commended.

The band ramps up the intensity on the improvised “Read This” with outstanding solo spots of bass and clarinet. “Surely Attended” is a creative free for all with intensely wild clarinet work. The soprano clarinet highlights “African Roll Mops” and on “Berceuse” the pace is more relaxed with a somewhat less intense approach. With “For Perry” (the album is dedicated to reed player Perry Robinson who unfortunately passed away in late 2018), the shrill clarinet notes and bowed scraping of the bass create an unstable soundscape that is just a little unsettling.

This trio offers some of the best improvising in the business so if that sounds good to your ears please check it out. A Not Two Records release.
