Guerra, Tom: American Garden

Tom Guerra began plying his trade playing the New England club circuit in the late ‘70s. From there he went on to play in bands such as Mambo Sons (1999 to 2012). He released his debut solo album All of the Above in 2014, followed by Trampling Out the Vintage (2016) and his latest titled American Garden (2018).

Guerra is influenced by classic rock, pure and simple. Bob Seger, Tom Petty, The Byrds, The Rolling Stones and Cheap Trick are some strong reference points. His guitar playing and lead vocals are very good and he has the art of the hook down pat. This isn’t complicated, just well-played rock music that your entire family can listen to. His lyrics are also worth mentioning as he tackles some important subjects; loss (“Jack for Joe” and “Meet Me at the Bottom of Your Glass”), Vietnam War (“American Garden”), politics , specifically about president you know who (“The Lyin’ King”) and white supremacy as in the Charlottesville protests (“Blood on the New Rising Sun”). I should also mention three of these tunes were written with Kenny Aaronson for a new Yardbirds album that never came to fruition. The music goes from up tempo rockers like the catchy riff laden “Goodbye to Yesterday” to beautiful introspection like the gut wrenching ballad “Meet Me at the Bottom of Your Glass”. He also does a nice job of Tom Petty’s “Walls”, a fitting tribute for sure.

American Garden is pure and honest rock music that just never gets old. If you dig any of the artists mentioned above this one should be on your list. Recommended.
