Gilmour, David: The Stockholm Syndrome

In 1984 David Glimour released his second solo album titled About Face, six years after his 1978 self-titled debut. The following tour encompassed Europe and North American dates. This particular FM broadcast was recorded at the Johanneshovs Isstadion, Stockholm, Sweden, April 24, 1984. For anyone who was at the concert The Stockholm Syndrome disc will bring back some nice memories I’m sure. For those who weren’t there (myself included) this set will fit nicely in your Gilmour/Floyd collection.

The two CD set includes most of the About Face disc, a few tracks from his debut and a couple of Floyd tunes. The concert begins with “Until We Sleep� starting with a pulsating effect slowly building before Gilmour’s signature vocals and guitar take hold. This is followed by another About Face tune “All Lovers Are Deranged�, written with Pete Townshend. What else can I say, Gilmour’s guitar and vocals are excellent. The sound quality isn’t great but not bad either and about on par with the other FM broadcasts I have heard. The classic “There’s No Way Out Of Here� and the very Floydy “Love On The Air� are next. The latter includes a superbly played extended sax solo and nuanced organ in the background. The rendition of “Mihalis�, one of my favourite tracks from the debut is classic Gilmour. The sax and guitar solos are unparalleled. The first disc ends with an excellent version of “Run Like Hell�.

The beautifully poignant “Out Of The Blue� begins the second set with a heartfelt and emotive performance. Then it’s the stabbing guitar and saxophone in “Let’s Get Metaphysical�, the catchy “You Know I’m Right�, Dechert’s fantastic organ sounds on “Blue Light�, the riveting electric guitar solos and fantastic bass in “Murder� and a cool version of the classic “Comfortably Numb�, a song that needs no introduction.

It’s been fun going back in time and listening to this great performance from one of the best musicians of modern times. Sound quality aside, this is very much recommended.
