Leonisa Ardizzone Quartet, The: All in Good Time

Leonisa Ardizzone is a biologist, science teacher and jazz singer. Her quartet released their debut album in 2007 titled Afraid of The Heights and followed it with The Scent of Bitter Almonds in 2009. After ten years we have her new release All in Good Time.

The album contains a mixture of standards, originals and a couple of rock tunes uniquely jazzified. The album opening cover of the Brubeck penned “My One Bad Habit� is old school nostalgia with Leonisa’s near perfect vocals and a clean, slow groove. It has an organic feel, very melodic with a nice piano solo. The Smiths’ “Girl Afraid� is an excellent choice featuring sublime piano over crisp drums and bass. On “When Hagar Ran� the hammered out piano chords exude passion and their cover of the Pretenders’ “Kid� fits nicely within the band’s thoughtful jazzed up approach. The piano is really quite beautiful throughout as each note hits just the right sentimentality and the solo spot is pretty awesome. Another unlikely cover includes The Go-Go’s “Our Lips Are Sealed� and I have to say it’s pretty cool with another excellent piano solo, scat vocals and a neat atmospheric segment. The bass solo in the old school jazz of “Someday My Prince Will Come� is another outstanding moment.

All in Good Time is another excellent jazz offering in what has been a very strong year for jazz. Fans of vocal led jazz should take notice.
