Swiss instrumental ensemble Sonar are at it once again, hot on the heels of their acclaimed Vortex release with this 2-track EP The Bill Laswell Mix Translations, where they have teamed up with producer/remixer/bassist Bill Laswell to deliver two remixed tracks from Vortex, of course with David Torn also along for the fun. Both "Vortex" and "Monolith" come out of Laswell's hands with a new approach, his groove laden bass & array of electronics adding a new element to the bands already spacey vibe on these two compositions, "Vortex" being mysterious, bubbling and boiling, Stephen Thelen, Bernhard Wagner, and Torn's guitars jagged yet thoughtful, while "Monolith" takes on a more funky appearance, combining with the space rock explorations for a wild ride. Christian Kuntner's dreamy bass co-exists with Laswell's more funk laden passages quite nicely, and Manuel Pasquinelli's hypnotic drumming is the icing on the cake.
Fascinating stuff here, a head on collision between three musical forces that is well worth investigating.
