Shades of Deep Water: Death’s Threshold
Even though Shades of Deep Water has released a handful of demos and EPs, they have only released two full-length albums: Waterways (2013), and Death’s Threshold (2019). With this album, the band continues to explore themes connected to funeral doom, its sounds, its themes, and its obsessions. True to form, this album moves along at a slow (and patient) pace, the kind frequently, but not always, marked by a pulsing cymbal, a consistent reminder that things are always heading toward the inevitable end. Even though the march toward death feels horizontal and deliberate, it could also described as vertical, so long as the direction is downward. And then there are the moments when things simply roam about, not in an improvisatory sense, but simply as a means of allowing the mind the wander. After all, funeral doom is all about pulling the listener downward so the depths of everything can be explored, contemplated, and accepted. This band succeeds precisely in such moments. If you enjoy funeral doom, this is a very strong release. If the genre is new to you, this might be a good place to start but be prepared for a slow ride. Funeral doom knows where it’s going but isn’t necessarily in a hurry. Since the album is really one long track broken up into 4 parts, I suggest enjoying it in one long sitting.
