Verve Jazz Ensemble, The: Night Mode

The Verve Jazz Ensemble formed in 2006 and have thus far released six studio albums, their most recent titled Night Mode. I have not heard the band before. Well, better late than never as this album will be a real treat for jazz fans.

On the album are six versions of the ensemble; septet, sextet, trio and three versions of a quintet with a total of seven members: Josh Feldstein (drums), Jon Blanck (tenor and soprano sax), Tatum Greenblatt (trumpet, flugelhorn), Alexa Tarantino (alto sax, alto flute, flute), Willie Applewhite (trombone), Steve Einerson (piano) and Elias Bailey (bass).

With a mixture of some classics and originals, Night Mode shows this ensemble at their absolute best. Of particular interest is the interplay of sax, trombone, trumpet and flugelhorn. The creative arrangements allow for some sizzling brass and woodwind interaction. For example, the tenor sax and trombone work on “Per Your Request� is absolutely fantastic with an outstanding melodic flair. The calming “Vivo Sonhando� is another highlight, so delightfully melodic with magical sax, flute and flugelhorn. The scintillating big band jazz in “Drumorello� forms another addictive melody and wonderful band interplay by all members of the quintet. The drumming of Feldstein is one of the CD’s many highlights.
