Joey Berkley Band, The: Moving Forward

The Joey Berkley Band was completely new to me until I heard their latest album titled Moving Forward. The band has been around for a number of years releasing their debut album titled Made In NYC in 2000. There have been a few albums released in the intervening years which I have not had the pleasure of hearing yet. This brings us to Moving Forward and what a great album it is.

The musicianship is excellent throughout the album’s nine tracks, all original compositions except for a cover of the yacht rock classic “Killing Me Softly”, a rather nice rendition I might add. The title track opens the disc with its exceptional drum rolls and intricate sax work before settling into a nice groove. The rhythm section is outstanding, playing with impeccable timing and skill. With the lovely “Loss And Found” the beat is soft and slow with a melody that is pure gold led by serene guitar and delicious sax carrying the hook. The waltz-like groove in the playfully titled “3/4 of 4/4” with its exquisite solo bass and sax figures and the somewhat funky “Alamo” display some serious chops. The calming sounds of the balladic “Hymn” ends the album as tender piano and sax reach a delightful conclusion to what is a fine album of discerning jazz.

The band is Joey Berkley (tenor saxophone, composer), Gary Deinstadt (piano), Andy Abel (guitar), Joris Teepe (acoustic bass) and Chris Parker (drums).
