35 Tapes: Lost & Found

35 Tapes is another new band founded in Oslo, Norway in 2018. In the band are Jarle Wangen (bass, electric and acoustic guitars, vocals), Morten Lund (electric and acoustic guitars, lapsteel, sitar, keyboards, vocals, Mellotron M 400) and Bjørn Stokkeland (drums). Their debut album is titled Lost & Found.

Soaring guitar and textural keyboard layers begin “Travel”, an excellent dreamy and pastoral symphonic prog tune. The vocals are superb, sung with feeling and the band generates a very atmospheric and lush sound. The guitar continues to soar and is stellar throughout. Pretty dramatic rhythmic crashes and more of that lovely guitar tone gives “Circles” a bit more dramatic flair. The groove settles in and the sound is quite Floydy. This band excels at creating lush textural layers giving the sound significant depth. This is another excellent track. “Wasteland” continues in a similar fashion with outstanding bass and synth work.

The disc ends with the nineteen minute “Mushrooms” and includes more excellent guitar work, both acoustic and electric. Lots of Floyd-like trippiness in this one as well as the mighty Mellotron. A fine epic track that should have wide range appeal.

Solid reference points would be the more pastoral side of Pink Floyd, Camel and Genesis. Newer bands like Airbag or Bjorn Riis are also a good fit. Another highly recommended release from Apollon Records.
