Oldfield, Mike: Carnegie Hall 1993

Mike Oldfield released his classic debut Tubular Bells in 1973. It was a landmark work but Oldfield was very young at the time and wanted to redo the album, making slight changes like reversing the notes, redoing harmonies, etc. So he set out to make Tubular Bells II. This CD is his North American debut performance at Carnegie Hall in 1993 of the then new album and every track is featured. I feel I have to point out that, according to some internet chatter, this album is actually Oldfield’s 1992 Tubular Bells II performance at Edinburgh Castle. Having not attended either performance I personally cannot verify this claim. Ok, on to the concert.

First of all the sound quality is quite good with decent dynamic range and instrumental clarity. Of course, Oldfield gives a flawless performance, especially riveting is his guitar work. The melodies stand out, very vibrant and majestic. Really, there is not much else to say with this one except that the performance speaks for itself. The music sounds perhaps less experimental as it did back in the early to mid ‘70s but that doesn’t diminish this performance in the slightest. The grandeur builds, finessed instrumentation, unbridled tension and creative genius is all present and accounted for. If you are a fan of Oldfield this performance should be very enjoyable. Recommended.
