Torche: Admission

Torche’s fourth album kicks things off with a killer riff, the kind that promises nothing but even more fuzz and heaviness. The album certainly delivers both of those, but the opening track also has a searching quality to it, one marked by its the closing question, “Where am I to go from here?” Questions like that spark reflections about possible shifts in musical emphasis and purpose. But “From Here” is less a push for a new direction than it is a reminder that Torche frequently keeps the focus on discovery rather than formula. I’m not suggesting this album marks a major shift in purpose and direction. To the contrary, this album delivers plenty of solid Torche-like fuzz. However, the band likes to challenge expectations in ways that have always made them hard to classify. In the past, I’ve compared them to Killing Joke and Mastodon, but Torche is obviously much more than any single influence.

On this album, the band exceeds expectations. The music is consistently thick and hard-driving, a sign of the band’s commitment to the sludgy and the loud. Tracks like “From Here,” “Submission,” and “Infierno” are superb from start to finish even though “From Here” is just over 90 seconds long. Given that song’s killer riff, it’s a shame we didn’t get even more. For those looking for the band’s slightly less sludgy sound, I recommend “Times Missing” and “Admission.”
