Dreadnought: Emergence

Sadly, my first exposure to Dreadnought comes with their fourth album. But if their first three albums are anything like Emergence, then I’ve got something to look forward to. If, like me, you are only hearing Dreadnought for the first time now, it helps to know that they write songs that are eclectic, ambitious, and dark. Most people would call their style progressive doom and that’s as good a description as any. Still, the band stands out from others because they explore even more possibilities in sound and style than you might expect. Fortunately, that makes the album both captivating and powerful.

New listeners will definitely get a kick out of the wide range of instruments here. Kelly Schilling not only provides vocals, but also plays the guitar and the flute. Jordan Clancy plays the drums and the saxophone. You should definitely go on YouTube to see him in action; reaching for a saxophone is much different than grabbing a drumstick. Rounding out the band, Lauren Vieira plays keyboards and sings while Kevin Handlon plays the bass and mandolin. It’s a curious mixture of instruments, but it never comes across as gimmicky. The worst thing this band could do would be to sell themselves solely on the saxophone-playing drummer. Whereas other bands would milk that for all it’s worth, Dreadnought just plays their instruments. Even better, they write terrific songs that you’ll want to explore multiple times. I liked “Pestilent” the most, but I’d also recommend checking out “Still” and “The Waking Realm.” Honestly, you can’t go wrong with any track on this one.
