Savoy Brown: City Night

Armed with his Gibson Les Paul and still very capable vocals, Kim Simmonds keeps on keeping on, doing what he does best, now over 50 years fronting the legendary blues rock act Savoy Brown, and the bands new album City Night is another prime example of high quality musical delights as only this outfit can deliver. With the same rhythm section for the last decade that includes Pat DeSalvo on bass and Garnet Grimm on drums, Savoy Brown deliver here a dozen sizzling blues rockers stacked to the gills with white hot Simmonds guitar licks, riffs, and solos, the tunes memorable, energetic, and packed with soul & groove. I dare anyone to try and avoid the infectious riffing and scorching lead guitar of "Payback Time", the energetic boogie of "Walking on Hot Stones" and "Red Light Mama", or the screaming licks of "Neighborhood Blues"...it won't be easy. For slower, passionate blues, there's "Selfish World", and fans of Robin Trower will love the moody "Wearing Thin", complete with some fuzz laden chords and biting lead guitar tones from Kim.

Simmonds shows the world here that at age 71 he still has plenty of rocking to do, and the heavy riffs and slashing leads of "Hang in Tough" would normally sound more obvious coming from a player half his age, but Kim's not afraid to let his inner guitar hero demon come out to play throughout City Night, and we should all be happy he did. This is easily one of the best old school blues rock albums you'll hear in 2019, created by a legendary British band that shows no signs of slowing down whatsoever.
