CranstoN: II

If you are a fan of AOR/melodic rock you have likely heard of vocalist/multi-instrumentalist Phil Vincent. His solo output and his involvement in many projects is extensive. This is another one of his latest endeavors, the sophomore effort from CranstoN titled II. Vincent, who handles the lead vocals is joined by Phil Sabu (guitars, bass, keys, backing vocals, production, mixing) and B.F. D’Ercole (drums).

Vincent has a great voice, ideally suited for melodic rock. He sounds superb on the album opening “Always On The Run” where the band might have borrowed a riff or two from ACDC. Hey, I’m not complaining as it’s a fun, melodic barn burner. Sabu also handles himself well in the vocal department providing excellent backup vox. More AOR melodic heaven can be heard on “What’s It Gonna Take” with its oh so catchy chorus followed by “Wrong Side Of Town”, a mid-tempo number with a heavier use of keyboards. Some cool sounds on this one. “Soul Crusher” offers a moodier and introspective intro, the music here is a bit darker in feel with plenty of depth with keyboard orchestrations having a really large sound. More melodic moments include the catchy chorus in “Tables Turning”, the tasty acoustic guitar and keyboard riffs in ”Wish I Had More Time” and the heavy “Throwin’ Down” with its propulsive rhythm section.

Melodic rock is alive and well anytime Phil Vincent is at the helm. CranstoN proves to be an excellent venture with a professional production and melodies all over the place.

A highly recommended release from the Rock Company label.
