Haze Mage: Chronicles

Just look at that cover art and tell me you aren’t a little bit curious. Here’s a strange bunch of characters clearly up to something"but what is it. There’s a withered old man (or is it an undead?) smoking a pipe and looking for something. There’s a horned figure that looks a little too much like the Wicked Witch. And then there’s a figure that’s probably the “bong witch” of track 3. There’s obviously more to look at and I recommend that you check out the cover art as part of your listening experience.

Haze Mage has been around since 2015. In 2017, they released a debut EP and they are now bringing us their special blend of doom and fantasy on their debut LP. The band describes their music as “sword and sorcery doom” and I hope that their sound and style catch on because it’s fun and dark and heavy in all the right ways. Like other doom bands, Haze Mage draws inspiration from Black Sabbath but fans will also hear elements of Queens of the Stone Age, The Sword, Sleep, High on Fire, and Clutch. Influences aside, this band has a strong sound and style that is worth a listen. I loved the opening track “Haze Mage” and thought the album delivered on that early promise all the way to the end. Like other high energy albums, things slow down a bit by the end but there’s no loss in songwriting skill. If anything, “Dread Queen,” the closing track, shows off the band trying out something twice as long as their other tracks.

This is definitely an album for fans of doom metal and, perhaps even more, for fans of music that explores alternative worlds populated by the strange, the wild, and the ferocious.
