At first glance, the name of this band seems to translate to “The Crap,” which is unfortunate. The KRP -- short for The Keith Reid Project, as in the co-founder of Procol Harum -- is an eclectic collective spearheaded by a guy who took a behind-the-scenes seat in the band responsible for “A Whiter Shade of Pale” and “A Salty Dog.” Reid wrote all the lyrics on In My Head, his second solo project, but performs none of the music. He collaborated with six songwriters and six singers, including John Waite, who delivers “All I Need to Know” and provides a glimpse of what Bad English might sound like in 2019.
The result is a soulful hybrid of Hall & Oates and Mike + The Mechanics, save for the four songs performed by vocalist Maya Saxell, who infuses the record with chilled, minimalist sophistication. In My Head is a well-paced and laid-back affair, highlighted by the lyrical cleverness of “The Bank of Worry” (“The Bank of Worry never sleeps/Right inside your dreams it creeps”) and the weary cynicism of “The Trial of the Century” (“The trail of the century/Ready to choke/You don’t need a hangman/When you’ve got enough role”).
In My Head, released by German label Rockville Music, will appeal not only to Procol Harum fans but also to enthusiasts of sensible, sensitive and striking songwriting.
