Various Artists: Shine On You Crazy Diamond " A Tribute to Pink Floyd’s Greatest Hits

When I first became aware of this compilation album it was a no-brainer for me on whether to review it as Pink Floyd is my favourite band. If you read my reviews this is something you likely already know. The album is Shine On You Crazy Diamond " A Tribute to Pink Floyd’s Greatest Hits. Although I have heard of some of these bands I haven’t heard them play. The only Pink Floyd tributes bands I have heard are Brit Floyd and Australian Pink Floyd. Consider my curiosity piqued. Of course the main issue with any project like this is do you faithfully try to recreate the original version or put a different spin on it and try to make it your own? Anyway, that’s a debate for another day.

The disc contains eighteen tracks by seventeen different bands. Dark Side of the Moon present the first track “Shine On You Crazy Diamond (Pts I-IV)”. This is an incredibly professional production and very much faithful to the original. The main difference between this and the original classic are the vocals but this is quite minimal. And yes, the vocals are excellent. The UK Floyd Division brings us “Time”, another faithful rendition that is indeed excellent. Judging from these tracks both bands would be incredible to see live. BERZON (Rob Berzon) contributes “Comfortably Numb”, another great track with some subtle differences all done very tastefully. My only complaint is the ending fade out which cuts short the guitar solo. The acoustic rhythms and vocal arrangement in “Learning To Fly” offers a different take by The Nashville Suns and some great guitar chugging in “Young Lust” performed by MYSTIC FORCE are other nice moments. Russian outfit Blacktown Band perform “Hey You” and certainly add their own spin, the female vocals in particular. The singer’s accent gives the song a slightly different feel. Perhaps my favourite tune is “The Final Cut” performed live by Several Species. Just a riveting and thought provoking performance.

That’s the first seven tracks. That leaves eleven more for Floyd fans to sink their teeth into. My only issue are some of the fade outs that prematurely end some of the tracks. Really, a pretty minor complaint all things considered. Overall, I very much enjoyed these different takes on classic Floyd.
