Kiss Kiss King Kong: B/B

Kiss Kiss King Kong is a retro psychedelic rock band/power trio hailing from Norway. Their second album is titled B/B, referencing the fact the album was recorded in two places; Berlin, Germany and Bergen, Norway. This is another excellent find from a band I had yet to hear. In the band are Eirik Utne (guitars, vocals, organ), Morten Mjørlaug (bass) and Einar Olsson (drums). Guests include Arle Hjelmeland (harmonica on track 6) and Lars Hammersland (organ on tracks 2, 3, 4, 6, 7 & 8).

For those of you into heavy fuzz this is the disc for you. The band has that retro ‘60s/’70s vibe down to a science. The guitar riffs are more than just straight ahead power rock, they are quite imaginative at times. Listen to the proggy riff progressions, including organ, in the excellent “668: Neighbour Of The Beast Part III” where a fuzz drenched soundscape meets moody atmospherics with a cool psychedelic sound throughout. More heavy fuzzed out workouts can be heard on “High And Low” and again the organ is quite prominent. The powerful opening track “Intro The Wild” and the catchy “Be Gone” are more great tunes and pretty accessible for those who give this band a chance.

The album ends with “Past Times” venturing into doomy riffs and mellower psychedelic textures. The lead vocals are also a highlight. Utne has a kind of dreamy, melodic voice that is very easy on the ears. Another strong point throughout the disc.

So there you have it. Another excellent release from 2018. I can’t wait to hear more from this fabulous Norwegian trio.

Released on Apollon Records.
