Protector: Summon the Hordes

German thrashers Protector travel across the known artistic universe from the movie “The Warriors” with the opening track “Stillwell Avenue” to ancient Roman soldier days in “Three Legions.” The second track “Steel Caravan” is a thoroughly influence piece between Motorhead and Raven. The vocals gargle throwing axes from the Viking campaigns but work well with the structure put forth in the album. The fifth song “Two Ton Behemoth” is an enjoyable almost more conventional thrash number focusing more on melody than crushing vocabulary in a blender of beastly growls. “Meaningless Eradication” is Sabbath-driven ala Candlemass and a totally catchy tune mashed up with speed metal ferocity. The drumming on this track is splendid and worth to note the work put in a by a musician bashing skins overtime. The guitar solo on this song is perhaps the best of the album. A real treat to stand out from the thrash formula this album is following.

“Unity, Anthems and Pandemonium” is an interesting track that strangely lacks of the elements listed in the title but still a moving metal mess of mayhem and midnight screaming. Ironically by being less formula this title shows the true identity of the band that is more than the sum of its musical by the numbers arrangements. The final track “Glove of Love” is a short but real rousing rumble featuring a strong vocal performance and persistent rhythmic guitar lines by a guitarist who if often lost in some of the thrash creations. Protector needs to break free from formula, in there they can find freedom and a more creative playing field.
