Zan Zone: Shorts

Here is another artist new to me. Brooklyn based guitarist Zan Burnham has been plying his trade for a few decades now. Zan Zone is the name of his project and his album titled Shorts was released in 2013.

The album consists of thirteen tracks, three of which are instrumentals starting with “Paen To The Muse” based on the seventeenth century folk melody “Lasst Uns Erfruen”. I have heard the melody before and the band certainly do it justice as this is a gorgeous rendition with lovely acoustic guitar being one of the highlights. Next is “One Step Left”, an easy to listen to slice of intelligent pop music with sumptuous backing vocals and floating keys. The guitar is amped out a bit towards the end. “Ice Day” is a somber bit of folk music with standout guitar work and keyboards. With the catchy “Days Of Our Lives” the infectious guitar, accordion and banjo had me thinking of Paul Simon’s Graceland album. “Metamorphosis” is a slow moving instrumental with drifting guitar and luxurious bass while “Things That Make Me Cry” is probably the most poignant offering with lovely backing vocals complementing Zan’s emotive singing.

My favourite track is the moody “Only The Earth Endures” where heavier guitar mixes it up with somber acoustic melodies and excellent vocals.

Shorts is a pretty unique rock album that mixes up a few different genres giving it a certain eclectic flavour. A very nice listen that just might appeal to the occasional prog fan.
