Mastord: Trail of Consequence

This five-track project listens more like an EP of the old days. The first selection “Silence Screams” is an epic length song of over ten minutes and features an unusual hybrid joining of symphonic and progressive metal. There are a number of influences from Kansas to King’s X weaving in and out of this lengthy but richly lyrical adventure. The vocalist Ex-Manitou, Markku Pihlaja is the perfect player in this clever ensemble.

The next track “The Dark Side of Human Mind” is nearly double the length of the opener and features a more traditional progressive metal sound. If there is a Mastord signature this song should cover that achievement. The guitar work on this song is tremendous since a very long progressive metal track allows for multiple solos; each one more in depth than the last. There is a cabaret-style departure towards the middle of song that is enjoyable and melds nicely with overall theme.

The third track “Ocean of Hate” is a standard length song and starts with a bluesy Pink Floydish guitar that pulls you into the tune. Great vocals and nice to hear a number that is both snappy and passionate without trying to set a recording record. “Burden” is a thrash metal song similar to the Anthrax type and a real headbanging piece of work. It is bound to be a favorite on this short album.

The final track “Heritage” is another longer track that opens with a strange Axl Rose influenced vocal is both welcoming and warm. The guitar melody is a mishmash of Lynch/Slash but is done masterfully and I am surprised how interesting this all sounds far less progressive metal and more 90’s throwback hard rock arena but then again they switch back to Kansas meet thrash metal and makes this a most outstanding piece of musical experimentation. There are numerous positives to take from this short project and I look forward to hearing a full album.
