Haunt: If Icarus Could Fly

Haunt opens the album with “Ride and Hide” a deliberate throwback to late 70’s, early 80’s hard rock a la On Through the Night from Def Leppard. There are shades of that sound and production qualities throughout the track. The second track “It’s In My Hands” is slated to be the hit single of the album and reaches all the expected points of formula for AOR.

“Clarion” is harder-edged song with guitar work reminiscent of Helloween but the vocals are straight forward unflashy examples of the safeness of the album thus far. At this point midway I was expecting a more diverse array of tracks and a distinctive turn towards a band signature-branded sound. The finest guitar work on this album is contained in “Wing of Destiny” and makes me wonder where was this quality on the rest of the tracks.

In “If Icarus Could Fly” the title track is another solid example of interesting vocals and inspired guitar but I am left mystified what happened to this project. The right elements of talented vocalist and very capable guitarist are definitely part of the production but it appears to be executed in haste and leaves the listener scratching their heads. I’m afraid Haunt is a band in search of its musical roots and this indecision seems to render many of the tunes as afterimages of better arrangements we’ve heard before.
