Dekonstruktor: Eating The Universe

More vintage droning doom from Russia comes my way, this time in the shape of the first of two Dekonstruktor releases, with this one being called Eating The Universe. Faintly whiffing of Godflesh, the deep, dark, depressive grind that unravels isn’t for the faint hearted, nor those in need of a pick me up. No, this is full on, nary a smile garnered gloom.

The main set-play is the closing, thirty minute mind-smash of “Dekonstruktor” itself, an uncompromising howl of despair that crawls along, on its knees and begs for no mercy. The middle section tries the patience in the extreme, with the riffology slipping away into almost ambient swipes that feel like they are pulled out for minor eternities. Then near silence rules, although the humming of guitar and amp soon takes over as we head into a closing few minutes of distorted sweeps and swoops that certainly don’t require repeat listens.

The rest of this release almost feels like a separate EP, the opening 41 seconds of “Out” smashing into the turgidly determined sludge of the title track, before the two minute “14” offers up a vocal induced (something of a rarity) release (something that’s even more scarce) from the inky blackness. Leaving the more lengthy and Sabbath inflected “To The Red Part 2” and trudging “Mindcutter” to indeed make you wonder if you’ve been dissected from your senses.

This is tough going. It’s meant to be tough going. Your fortitude and the mental images you bring with you will determine exactly what you take away.
