Prion: Aberrant Calamity

I am officially terrified of the creature on the cover. It’s like a humanoid insect thing that either has a huge tail or its attached to something even more terrifying. I can’t say whether that bug monster has much to do with any single track here, but the music here could certainly accompany its every attack. Prion has long been known for giving fans the most brutal and massive extreme metal and this album shows that they simply can’t slow down. The musical attack is relentless and grinding in ways that fans will love and skeptics will hate. Fans of powerful drumming will especially like the band’s new drummer Flavio Coscarella. This guy just pounds and pounds and pounds. Once you hear those drums, you’ll be tempted to look over your shoulder for the monster making all that sound.

I haven’t listened to much technical death metal lately, but I know how it’s supposed to sound. Fans will definitely enjoy Prion’s latest release. If there’s a weakness here, it’s that the onslaught never stops to breathe even though there’s a song called “I Remembered to Breathe” and another called “Slow Down.” We all could use a moment to breathe and to catch up with our thoughts, but don’t look for that here.

Check out “I’m Jonah, Sacrifice Me” and “Slow Down.” If you like what you hear, then go back to the start.
