Unkh: Innerverse

Unkh is another new find for me. The Dutch quartet has been around since 1991 but it wasn’t until 2014 they released their debut album titled Traveler. In 2018 they followed it up with Innerverse, a very nice modern yet somewhat nostalgic progressive rock album.

The band consists of Maarten Peerings (guitar), Jeroen Habraken (lead vocals, keyboards, programming), Matthijs van Nahuijs (bass guitar, bass pedals, backing vocals) and Maarten Habraken (drums, percussion, backing vocals).

The band mix music influenced by classic progressive rock bands like King Crimson and Yes with new wave sounds all wrapped together with an imaginative and creative twist. “Paranoid Void” begins the album with some cool effects and electronics. A heavy breathing effect sounds a bit creepy before a deep reverberating keyboard and dreamy vocals begin. The music builds, some nice keys and synth textures develop into a heavy rock landscape of razor sharp guitar and grooving tempos. Heavy guitar riffs, complex drum patterns and huge sounding synths give “Deep” a melodic and rather intense sound. The epic of the album is the nineteen minute “Dreamcatcher”. You get melodic prog with great riffs, solos and a multiple coloured sound palette varying from heavy to trippy with shades of light and dark. It’s an excellent way to end the album.

Innerverse had me intrigued right from the get go. I think a wide ranging spectrum of progressive rock fans will really appreciate this album. This one earns an excellent 4 stars.

A Freya Records release.
